ISO/IEC 42001

ISO/IEC 42001:2023, published in December 2023, is the first international management-system standard specifically for artificial intelligence, and remains the current and only edition. It specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, and continually improving an AI management system (AIMS), using the same Plan-Do-Check-Act structure as ISO/IEC 27001, and addresses AI-specific concerns like risk assessment across the AI lifecycle, bias and impact management, transparency, and use of third-party or foundation-model components. It's aimed at any company that designs, develops, deploys, or heavily relies on AI systems and wants to show customers or regulators it has formal AI governance in place.
